The mineral half of Americans are missing

Roughly 50% of US adults don't consume enough of it. Most people don't know this because the standard blood test misses it: only 1% of your body's supply lives in your blood. The rest is locked in bones and cells, invisible to routine labs. The risk rises with age, with poor diet, and with the medications most older adults already take. This week, we look at what the evidence actually shows.

The longevity risk no doctor measures

The longevity risk no doctor measures

In May 2023, the U.S. Surgeon General issued a formal advisory declaring a national public health crisis. The World Health Organization called it a global health threat the same year. The risk is as deadly as smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day. One in two American adults has it. And almost no doctor measures it. This week, we look at what the evidence actually shows.

The 40% mortality drop nobody talks about

The 40% mortality drop nobody talks about

A 20-year study of 2,315 Finnish men found that those who used a sauna 4 to 7 times per week had a 40% lower risk of dying from any cause than those who used one only once a week. They also had 66% lower dementia risk and 50% lower cardiovascular mortality. The intervention is not a drug. It is not a supplement. And outside of Finland, almost nobody does it consistently. This week, we look at what the evidence actually says.

The biggest dementia risk factor is in your ears

The biggest dementia risk factor is in your ears

In 2024, a Lancet commission of 27 leading dementia researchers reviewed every modifiable risk factor for cognitive decline. The single largest one was not diet, exercise, or alcohol. It was hearing loss. And in a landmark 2023 trial, hearing aids reduced cognitive decline by 48% in high-risk older adults over three years. This week, we look at what the evidence actually says, and why this might be the most underused longevity lever of the past decade.

The molecule your cells run out of by 50

The molecule your cells run out of by 50

Inside every cell in your body, there is a molecule called NAD+. It powers DNA repair, regulates the genes that control aging, and runs the energy production line in every mitochondrion you have. Between your 20s and your 60s, your NAD+ levels fall by roughly 50%. The question every longevity researcher is now trying to answer is whether you can put it back, and whether doing so meaningfully slows aging. This week, we look at what the evidence actually shows.

The official protein guideline is wrong for anyone over 50

The official protein guideline is wrong for anyone over 50

The official protein recommendation is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day. For a 70kg adult, that works out to 56g of protein, or roughly the amount in two chicken breasts. This number was set decades ago using a method that asked one simple question: how little protein can you consume without becoming deficient? It was never designed to optimize anything. And for anyone over 50, the research now shows it is almost certainly too low.
